A Victorian Conservatory - is it the right option for you?
Building a conservatory as an extension to your home can present you with a whole range of options to choose from. One of the options available is what we term a Victorian conservatory. These are so named due to them first appearing in the Victorian era during the reign of Queen Victoria with their period style characteristics - ornate high roofs and rounded appearance. They also give you a panoramic view of your garden which is a very appealing feature due to their three or five faceted design.

They are a very popular choice. In fact one of the most popular options on the market today. They can be used as a playroom extension or a dining room or a second living room. Most Victorian conservatories come with a dwarf low brick wall but there is the option of having fully glazed too.
They tend to be a more exquisite and costly option than your lean-to conservatory option and you'll probably be attracted to its ornate, tasteful and traditional style.
What is the difference between an Edwardian and Victorian Conservatory?
Simply put, Victorian conservatories come with a steep pitched roof and ornate detail with a 3 or 5 faceted front, capable of looking out at all angles over the garden and light pouring in from all directions.

In comparison, an Edwardian conservatory came in after the reign of Queen Victoria and is a more subdued and modern style of conservatory. They tend to maximise the amount of floor space available and are more rectangular or square in shape.

Like the lean to conservatory, the Edwardian conservatory has clean lines that compliment most properties making them again the perfect choice for a modern garden room, study or playroom.

Planning Permission
You won’t normally need planning permission for a Victorian conservatory, but this is something you will need to check. We do however recommend you visit the government’s planning portal to view the regulations yourself.

Variations to base and structure
Victorian conservatories come in many variations and options for the base and overall structure of the conservatory. These include dwarf walls, full height glass or UPVC panels. You can also choose from timber or aluminium structures.

UPVC panels are normally the most affordable options. Note though that you can either have dwarf walls for a more solid structure and providing a greater level of privacy and security. Many now opt for fully glazed from top to ground floor level so the whole structure acts as more of a sun room capturing the light and warmth.
