SO HERE ARE THE 10 BIGGEST MISTAKES TO AVOID
1. Making the wrong assumptions about planning permission
It is critical that you seek advice on Planning Permission, even though most conservatories do not this, don’t assume you are exempt from this.
If you do not seek the right advice and build the conservatory, it can mean having to take it all down. Make sure you choose a conservatory company that has a lot of knowledge in this area and that can point you in the right direction for planning advice and your permitted development rights.
2. Choosing cheaper glass without temperature control
It is critically important to choose the right glass so your conservatory can be cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.
So you definitely need to think about temperature control. There are several type of specialist temperature controlled glass but you need to choose one with a low U-value to keep heat in during winter reducing heating costs, and that lessens the heat and sunlight coming through in summer.
It is worth paying extra for premium glass for the roof and windows and French or bifold doors to make sure your new space is comfortable all year round. Going for a budget option will mean that you are less able to enjoy your new room and could even cost you more money in the future to upgrade.
You can opt to have a warm tiled roof installed instead of a glass roof and even though more expensive, the extra you pay ensures you have the look and feel of a proper extension.
3) Not Considering Insurance Backed Guarantees
Make sure that the Conservatory Supplier and Installer that you choose offer Insurance Backed Guarantees. If for some reason, they go out of business in the future, you will need this to make any claims for faulty goods or installation that rears its head within the Guarantee period.
4) Getting Only One Quote From a National Company
Make sure that you do not just get a quote of one of the big well known national Conservatory companies out there as their prices can come in 3 to 4 times more expensive with no more quality than a quote half or a third of their price. . They often offer no better guarantees or better quality.
5) Not Checking the Credentials Of The Fitters
Check that your conservatory installer employs PROFESSIONAL TRADESMEN, especially with national companies and check how long they have been in business. They deal with that many installations around the country and often use fitters with limited experience. In most cases, you will find that smaller and more local installers have professional tradesmen.
Many people do not even ask the question ‘How many years of experience has the installer got’ - you are investing a heavy amount of money into your property. Do you really want to take the risks with a Conservatory installer who only has a few months or a year or so of experience?
6) Not Checking The Thermal Quality Of The Products
Make sure that the Conservatory Supplier is fitting C rated windows or above if window frames are being installed - C rated windows ad above are the norm these days but you can also get A rated windows (more thermally efficient) at an extra cost.
7) Not Checking The Work & Installation Schedule
Make sure that you sign a Contract whereby you know what the approximate start date is, the scheduled payment set up is and the final balance due date. You do not want any nasty shocks when it comes to start dates and unexpected payments due.
8) Not Asking The Installer if there are any ‘added extras’ that could creep in
Be careful of any ‘added extras’ that may creep onto the quotation once the job is initiated. Some companies refrain to tell you that say for instance, the disposal of your old conservatory was NOT included in the original quotation and this is a hefty added extra.
9) Not Checking the Guarantees on all the Fixtures and Fittings
Make sure you ask about the quality of the fixtures and the fittings (ie. the locks, the handles etc) that come with any windows or doors. Too many companies out there use shoddy fixtures and fittings and this will come back on you later on and if they are offering no guarantees, the remedial cost will come down on you.
10) Not Doing Enough Research into the product choices for your home
Make sure that the Conservatory Supplier offers enough choice and styles for you to be happy with the products being installed to SUIT your property. Make sure you are employing someone professional enough that can sit down with you and go through all the options of styles and colours you have. Many people think that you have to have just white and this is simply not true.Over the years, we have seen so many sub standard products being installed and many disappointed customers.
