Why Double Glazing? What Are The benefits?

Double glazed units, commonly referred to as double glazing or double-pane windows, are windows made with two layers (panes) of glass separated by a gap filled with air or inert gas, such as argon.

This construction provides several benefits:

* Greatly Improved Insulation: The narrow gap between the glass panes acts as a good insulator, reducing the heat lost between the inside and outside. This helps to keep the interior way warmer in Winter and much cooler in the summer months which leads to much reduced energy consumption for your home or premises.

* Much Reduced Condensation: Installing Double glazing helps reduce condensation forming on the interior surface of your windows; the reason being is because the inner pane is much warmer, therefore helping to reduce any moisture buildup.

* Way Better Soundproofing: The dual layers of glass with an insulating gap between them help to reduce the transmission of sound, providing a quieter indoor environment, particularly in urban or noisy areas.

* Increased Security: Double glazing provides an additional layer of security compared to single-pane windows, making it more difficult for intruders to break through.

Overall, double glazed units offer improved energy efficiency, comfort, and security compared to traditional single-pane windows, making them a popular choice for modern buildings and renovations.

How Does Double Glazing Work?

So many things to consider when it comes to Double Glazing and making it way more efficient

These include:

  • Argon gas being between the double glazed panes and this has a 34% lower thermal conductivity to air hence cold air cannot pass so easily.

  • The thermally efficient gaskets that are installed have a high thermal efficiency and are manufactured to sit tight and not shrink so they are always airtight.

  • The spacers that keep the glass panes apart are actually non-conductive so this stops heat transfer from occurring.

  • The glass itself also has a thermally efficient coating and this reflects heat back into the room and at the same time allows heat and light from the sun to pass through.

How Does Double Glazing Reduce Noise?

`Double Glazing is an excellent thermal insulator as we now know but double glazing also helps to reduce noise from busy roads coming into our homes.

This is because sound is a sound wave and travels longitudinally away until it reaches our ears. So with 2 layers of glass to stop the sound wave, the less audible noise will enter the room.

The larger the gap between the panes of glass, the greater the acoustic insulation. This can be improved by making one pane of glass thicker than the other eg. , 6mm on one side and less on the other side; maybe 4mm. With this system, the different thicknesses alter the properties of the sound wave making it less in volume entering the room.

Many homeowners need  trickle vents but they are can increase ventilation but have a negative impact on sound entering the room as they create an opening through which the sound can travel.

Triple glazing can again prove to be more effective at sound reduction but its maximum benefits are only realised if the panes of glass are different thicknesses.

What Does Double Glazing Really Do?

The real  benefits of installing double glazing in your home can be summarised in a few bullet points

They essentially give:

  • Much lower energy bills in comparison to single glazing

  • Reduced carbon footprint so more environmentally friendly

  • Way less draughts and cold spots in your home

  • Helps reduce noise pollution from roads and other outside sources.

So in summary, your house is  guaranteed to be a LOT  warmer and quieter.
